Mobile video accounts for three-fifths of global views

Ooyala’s Global Video Index Report for Q4 2017

Ooyala’s Global Video Index Report for Q4 2017 has raised a lot of nostalgia in the office about just how far we have come in the last 14 years!

Our first company launched in 2003, specialising in licensing content for mobile devices.

Back then of course, fixed width images of 100 pixels were all your mobile could cope with and even by 2006 when videos WERE possible, we were having to compress them into just a few bytes of data. it wasn’t a great experience to say the least and a far cry from where we are today!

I remember speaking at conferences in 2014, boldly stating that 2014 would be the year when mobile video views outnumbers desktop video views for the first time.

But we’ve gone much further than that already. Now three-fifths of ALL global video views are from mobile!

It demonstrates a massive social shift in how the human race is consuming content.

Equally importantly, it throws up important considerations about the new strategies required to ensure a quality experience (not just technically, but contextually) if viewer’s primary screen is no longer the television.

It also highlights the importance of great content! Jim O’Neill, Ooyala principal analyst said “Content is experiencing a flood unlike anything the industry has previously seen … and there is no end in sight. It’s the lifeblood of an over-the-top provider and the key to keeping users engaged and coming back for more, especially if you maintain regular contact with your customers, letting them know in advance that new content is on the way.”
