ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month In Company History

This is a great example of the seismic shift in viewing habits in the new digital entertainment space. As OTT grows at a mind boggling rate in terms of subscribers: www.parksassociates.com (this article also highlights very interestingly that the device most used to view OTT services is still the television!), one of the largest cable sports providers, ESPN, has lost over 600,000 subscribers in just one month! This equals around $52 million in lost revenue.

Also interesting in this article is how their short-sighted agreements with the existing cable and satellite companies back in the day have left them without the opportunity to go over-the-top to subscribers. Some of the stats in this great summary article are the writing on the wall for any broadcast company not already in the new economy for entertainment viewing! I expect we’ll see more of these!
